South India has a wide range of yoga retreats: luxury integrated wellness centres, Ayurveda hospitals with daily yoga, beach retreats and small meditation spaces. This overview describes the main types and gives examples drawn from providers' own public descriptions. It's not a ranking or endorsement, and LongevityVeda hasn't visited these places.

Types of yoga retreat you'll find

  1. Integrated wellness retreats. Yoga combined with Ayurveda and naturopathy, nutrition and doctor consultations. Often premium.
  2. Ayurveda centres with yoga. The main focus is an Ayurveda programme, with daily yoga sessions included.
  3. Yoga holiday retreats. Daily classes in a scenic setting (beach, backwaters, hills), with leisure time.
  4. Meditation and spiritual retreats. Quieter, often simpler places focused on meditation, breathwork and silence.
  5. Teacher training courses. Structured multi-week courses. Check the visa category, because the e-Visa rules distinguish short-term yoga programmes from formal courses (e-Visa portal FAQ).

Karnataka

  • Bengaluru outskirts: several residential wellness centres are within a couple of hours of the city. Shreyas Retreat in Nelamangala describes a programme combining yoga, Ayurveda, nutrition and naturopathy, with scheduled morning and evening yoga sessions and vegetarian meals (Shreyas wellness packages). SOUKYA in Whitefield describes an integrative residential approach combining Ayurveda, homeopathy, yoga and naturopathy on a 30-acre farm (SOUKYA). Naturopathy-and-yoga institutions such as Jindal Naturecure Institute (JNI) and Kshemavana (Kshemavana) are also near Bengaluru.
  • Mysuru: well known internationally as a yoga destination. Indus Valley Ayurvedic Centre describes itself as an Ayurveda and yoga centre there (IVAC).
  • Gokarna coast: SwaSwara on Om Beach describes itself as an eco-luxury retreat blending Ayurveda, naturopathy, Hatha yoga, meditation and art (SwaSwara).

Kerala

Many Kerala Ayurveda centres include daily yoga. Some put yoga in their name, for example Nattika Beach Ayurveda and Yoga Centre near Thrissur, which appears on Kerala Tourism's list of approved Ayurveda centres (Kerala Tourism approved list). Coastal areas such as Varkala and Kovalam have a mix of yoga schools, beach retreats and Ayurveda resorts.

Tamil Nadu (including Auroville and Pondicherry)

  • Auroville area: Arka offers Iyengar yoga and Pilates classes alongside wellness therapies, according to Auroville's site (Arka). Dhyana Retreats describes itself as a meditation and healing retreat near Auroville (Dhyana Retreats). See our [Auroville and Pondicherry guide](./04-wellness-retreats-near-auroville-pondicherry.md).
  • Coimbatore: Vaidyagrama describes itself as an Ayurveda healing village that also welcomes yoga and wellness groups (Vaidyagrama).

How to choose

Match the style

Ask which yoga style is taught (Hatha, Iyengar, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, restorative) and whether classes suit beginners. Integrated retreats often adapt sessions to the individual.

Check the teachers

Ask about teachers' training and experience. Many international teachers hold Yoga Alliance registration, and India has its own certification schemes. Ask what applies.

Understand the daily schedule

How many hours of yoga a day? Is there meditation, pranayama or kriya (cleansing practices)? How much free time?

Food and lifestyle rules

Many retreats are vegetarian and alcohol-free, and some keep silence hours or limit devices. Shreyas, for example, describes a vegetarian, alcohol-free approach (Shreyas).

Total cost and inclusions

Ask for an itemised quote covering accommodation, meals, classes, consultations, treatments, transfers and taxes. See our [cost guide](./03-ayurveda-retreat-cost-india.md).

Questions to ask before booking

Ask each provider how many hours of yoga are scheduled daily, the maximum class size, whether private sessions are available, and what happens if you need to miss sessions because of a treatment or illness. Get the answers in writing with your quote.

Seasons

  • Kerala: October to March is the main travel season. The monsoon is promoted for Ayurveda (see our [best time guide](./08-best-time-visit-kerala-ayurveda.md)).
  • Karnataka (Bengaluru, Mysuru): the inland plateau climate is milder than the coast for much of the year.
  • Tamil Nadu coast: the northeast monsoon brings most of the rain, roughly October to December.

Safety notes

If you have injuries, are pregnant, or have any medical condition, tell the teacher and talk to your doctor first. If an Ayurveda programme is part of the retreat, read independent safety guidance such as NCCIH.
